Vugaix

Vugaix is the infamous mushroom forest region sharing the centre of Barogate’s wastes with the desert of Kyenel. The mushroomy growths are known to be a relatively recent phenomena, as the rare but well understood book “The Everlasting War” describes how the God of Growth created the Vugaix and “grew” it over the sands of Kyenel. Kyenel and sand were a symbol of the God of Decay, so the ‘everlasting war’ described in the title of the piece is the struggle between these two gods to influence these two regions of the Wastes to outgrow each other.

The region is widely known to be the second most dangerous area on the two continents, the first position being reserved for the completely inhospitable Llyhai. Vugaix, while hospitable, is made home by some of the fiercest and most dangerous creatures in all of Wastelife. These range from horrific leg beasts that dart through the dense forestry with the speed of a diving bird and the accuracy of a diving bird, to otherwise simplistic predators that pray on Vugaix’s many herbivorous creatures.

Geography and climate

Vugaix is part of the arid desert of Kyenel. Since its transformation, the ground temperature is a lot more stable thanks to a continuous, solid canopy formed by the tops of the mushroom trees.

Scattered across the Vugaix are several “oases”. The canopy dies back, the ground is relatively wet, and mushrooms grow on the dirt. These regions apparently serve an important ecological niche to keep the forest alive. Some oases house built up Mad settlements, which are almost always walled and have cramped houses built out of mushroom timber.

The border region with Kyenel is a highly active climates. They are teeming with unique, combative species of fungi and fauna. These are the ecological participants of the Everlasting war.

The border region with the Heabe is a bit more moderate: the canopy cuts back to mycelium grass, before traditional grass takes over.

The border with Ralean is sharp. The canopy cuts a few kilometres before the river.

Name Origin

There is nothing here in the real DeMoch, the mushroom forest was completely made up. Its name comes from a simplification of ‘Shivugi Madax’ which is literally ‘Forest Mushroom’.
